A Simple Game, A Season of Joy

Last week I had to make a hospital visit to someone from church. I put on my pastoral hat and went with one of our other pastors so we could go together. When I walked into the lobby, I was immediately distracted, in the best way, by the giant Christmas tree shining in the corner. It was gorgeous, tall, sparkling, and absolutely begging me to take a picture with it. I love the white lights sparkling and the red and silver added it.

So of course… I did. A selfie and a full-tree shot.
Because why not?!

This morning on social media I decided to have a little fun and asked my friends and family to guess where I took the picture. And honestly—it worked! People actually engaged. Some used great inference skills, remembering I’ve had physical therapy visits and doctor appointments. Others just guessed hospitals or clinics. It made me smile. I didn’t expect something so simple to bring such joy.

But the truth is… sometimes these little silly moments are exactly what our hearts need.
A moment of lightness.
A reason to smile.
A tiny game that reminds us we’re connected to people who care.

And isn’t that part of what this season is all about?

Christmas joy isn’t just found in perfectly decorated homes or big events—it shows up in small bursts of delight. Even something as simple as a selfie next to a public Christmas tree can stir a bit of wonder inside us.

It made me think about the joy wrapped up in the good news of Jesus’ birth:

“I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.”
—Luke 2:10

The angels didn’t say “good news of great seriousness” or “good news of quiet reflection.”
They said great joy—joy that reaches everyone.
Joy that finds us in hospital lobbies, car rides, busy days, and healing seasons.
Joy that shines as brightly as those Christmas tree lights.

The birth of Jesus brings this deep, unshakeable joy:
God came close.
He came for us.
And that truth fills even the simplest moments with meaning.

So now I think I’m ready to go find more public Christmas trees and take more selfies—just for the fun of it. Because a little joy goes a long way, especially in a year full of stretching, healing, and waiting.

If a silly guessing game can brighten someone’s day…
why not keep spreading that joy?

May we all find small, unexpected reasons to smile this season
and may the joy of Jesus shine brightly in every simple moment.

Please if you see a public Christmas tree go take a selfie and send me a picture as I would love to see it!

Common Mistakes Made When Writing a Will

Writing a will should, by all means, be a simple thing. You want to make sure that your assets are being left to your loved ones and that your final wishes are being fulfilled. Usually, they are rather straightforward, but that doesn’t mean that they are entirely foolproof. Here, we’re going to look at some common issues that can lead to disputes or delays in carrying out your will. Image - CC0 License Not Having It Witnessed Correctly One of the most common mistakes when writing a will is not having it witnessed correctly. Wills generally require the signatures of at least two witnesses who are not beneficiaries or spouses of beneficiaries. If the will is not witnessed in accordance with legal requirements, it may be declared invalid, meaning your estate would be distributed according to intestacy laws, which may not align with your wishes. It’s important to follow the witnessing procedures exactly as outlined in your jurisdiction to ensure the will is legally enforceable. Chan...
