I had silently hoped winter would hold off a little longer… at least until I was boot-free. But snow does what snow wants, and I had places to be, so out the door I went boot and all.
And the boot got wet.
And when the boot got wet, the boot started to stink.
And suddenly I realized… there is something worse than fear.
Embarrassment.
Embarrassment of having a stinky boot.
So now we’re adding another layer to this healing journey: humility. Nothing humbles you faster than walking around hoping no one catches a whiff of your medical footwear.
But even in this, God has a way of speaking truth right into the moment:
“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
James 4:6
“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.”
1 Peter 5:7
Even when the fears feel silly…
Even when the embarrassment feels real…
Even when the situation seems ridiculous…
He cares.
He’s near.
And He has grace for even this.
Here’s the encouragement I’m reminding myself of:
Sometimes healing humbles us in unexpected ways. Sometimes the journey isn’t just about strengthening the body but softening the heart. And sometimes, God uses even a soggy, stinky boot to remind us that we don’t walk alone—and we don’t have to pretend to be strong all the time.
Lord, help me walk this journey with humility, honesty, and trust—even when it smells a little rough. Give me grace to laugh, courage to keep moving forward, and faith to know that You are in every step. Amen.
If God can use a donkey, He can certainly use a stinky boot.
